Women Can Do Conference: Thursday, October 13, 2016!

Calling all Hazen Girls: Let's Change the Tide!

A non-traditional career is defined as a career in which less than 25% of a gender is represented in that career.  For example:

  • In 2012, 3.4% of firefighters were women.
  • In 2012, 1.2% of automotive service technicians were women.
  • In 2012, 1.6% of carpenters were women.
  • In 2012, 4.8% of welders were women.
  • In 2012, 7.2% of cosmetologists were men.

Women comprised 58.1% of the total U.S. labor force in 2011, simply stated, in the United States, there are currently more women in the workforce than men.  But as the numbers above show, only a small percentage of women go into jobs that have been typically held by men.  There are lots of efforts happening to try to introduce young women to non-traditional trades, and one of those efforts is the Women Can Do Conference on Thursday, October 13th at Vermont Technical College.  This conference offers more than 35 hands-on workshops, led mostly by women who are professionals in the skilled trades or science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields.

If you are a young woman in grade 9-12 who is interested in attending this exciting and fun filled day, please sign up with Bryanne Marquis in the guidance department. The field trip is free, includes lunch, lots of great give-a-ways, and transportation to and from the event. For more information, visit Women Can Do online or contact Jen Olson at jolson@ossu.org or Lynn Patenaude at lpatenaude@ossu.org.
